YouTube vs. Vimeo: Which is Better for Video Hosting?

Getting the final cut of your video is an exciting moment! It’s the culmination of lots of hard work and collaboration with a video marketing partner like us.

At this point in the process, you’ll have to decide where your video will “live.” Vimeo and YouTube are two of the most popular video streaming platforms we recommend to our clients.

Both platforms have pros and cons, so the one you choose will depend on your unique business and your marketing plan for the video.

Here’s an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of both platforms:

YouTube’s Advantages

1. Reach and Discoverability: According to DataReportal’s Digital 2024 Global Overview Report, YouTube’s potential ad reach totals 2.49 billion users, half of the 5.04 billion worldwide social media users (Sprout Social). When you share a video on YouTube, you can tap into that massive user base.

2. Low Cost: You can post your videos on YouTube for free, and the upload time limit is 15 minutes. If you verify your account, you can upload videos longer than 15 minutes. Vimeo’s free account upload limit is only 1 GB, so you’ll likely need to upgrade to their starter plan, which is $12 per month.

3. Comprehensive Analytics: YouTube has a comprehensive analytics dashboard that allows you to see insights into the reach, engagement, and audience of each of your individual videos. If your goal is to grow your audience on YouTube, these analytics could help you generate insights about what types of content perform best. That information can guide your video strategy moving forward.

YouTube’s Disadvantages

1. Ads: Since YouTube is free to use, the video viewing experience will be interrupted by advertisements. You can skip the ads after a few seconds, but it can be disruptive. Users can sign up for YouTube Premium to enjoy an ad-free experience.

2. Limited Video Player Customization: Once you’ve embedded a YouTube video on your site, it can be difficult to customize the appearance of the video player. Many customizations require coding and can be time-consuming. On the other hand, paying Vimeo users can easily customize the video player, and the extensive options allow you to create a look that’s cohesive with your website and brand.

3. Competition: According to wyzowl.com, an average of 2,500 new videos are uploaded to YouTube every minute. That’s a lot of content to compete with! While YouTube’s large user base is an advantage, the competition on the platform can be a disadvantage.

Vimeo’s Advantages

1. High Video and Sound Quality: There’s no question that Vimeo offers better video quality and sound quality than YouTube. Their fast-loading HTML5 video player hosts videos in 4K, 8K, HDR, and Dolby Vision. The reason for the difference in quality is that YouTube compresses videos for space and data purposes, while Vimeo videos maintain their high-quality visuals. (lemonlight.com). In addition to visual aspects, with a constant bitrate of 320 kbps, Vimeo offers advanced sound quality compared to other video players (Source: Vimeo).

2. More Direct Traffic to Your Website: Google owns YouTube and trusts its own content; therefore, “Google is more likely to crawl and index YouTube content more quickly and thoroughly than other sites.” (directom.com) While YouTube videos get priority in searches, Vimeo argues that hosting your video on their platform can drive more search engine traffic to your site. They make a good case: “If you embed a YouTube video on your website, and it ranks for your target terms, when users click the video snippet on Google, that traffic goes to YouTube – not to your website.” Not to mention, Vimeo recently improved its Video SEO. In an effort to optimize indexing and give embedded video a better chance at appearing in relevant searches, they adopted Google’s new guidance for video players using iframe embeds.

3. Privacy and Control: Vimeo’s privacy settings can make it easier to ensure you control who sees your video. You can set custom permissions, password protection, and publish private videos. YouTube’s privacy settings are more limited. Unlike Vimeo, unlisted YouTube videos can’t be indexed on your website.

Vimeo’s Disadvantages

1. Cost: To get all of the benefits of Vimeo, you may need to sign up for one of their paid plans. The plans range from $12 to $108 per month, depending on your needs. Vimeo’s free plan includes 1 GB of storage and one user seat. To give you a better idea of video file sizes, one hour of full HD (1080p) video is about 4-8 GB (Source: overcasthq.com). The free plan’s storage limit will likely be a roadblock for you if you have multiple videos to upload.

2. Smaller Audience: Another downside to Vimeo is that its audience is significantly smaller than YouTube’s. There are around 260 million active users on Vimeo compared to over 2 billion on YouTube. According to lemonlight.com: “After Google, YouTube is the most visited site on the internet and the second biggest search engine in the world.” If you want visibility for your video, Vimeo may not be your best option.

3. Less Mobile Friendly: YouTube is one of the world’s leading video apps. In 2023, it ranked third with 182 million downloads by global users (Statista). Mobile accessibility is undoubtedly something to consider as you choose a platform for your content because of how prevalent mobile video consumption has become. In 2023, nearly 70% of the U.S. digital video content audience reported watching videos on their smartphones compared to 59% who said they stream video on a smart TV. Vimeo has an app, but it doesn’t rank in the ten most popular mobile video apps worldwide in 2023.
